Home Energy Scotland Grant and Loan
The Home Energy Scotland Grant and Loan is available to residents living in Scotland who are looking to make sustainable energy improvements in their home. There are lots of advantages to this as it is not just about installing solar panels it can also be used for air source heat pumps, biomass boilers, wind turbines, triple and double glazing, storage heaters and electric heating systems. Solar panel and battery storage loans are available for up to £12,000 which will cover most initial installation costs.

*£5,000 – £9,999: 10 years.
*more than £10,000: 12 years.
Repayments begin after you have received a payment. This means you are not paying a lot of money up front for your solar panels to be installed, saving you up to 75% of the full cost. The maximum grant amount is £9,000 or £12,000 if the household qualifies for a rural uplift. For solar photovoltaic (PV) panels £6,000 (£1,250 of the £6,000 loan is available as a grant, but only if taken as a package of measures). Solar PV, battery storage systems, biomass boilers / stoves and high heat retention storage heaters may be eligible for grant funding when certain conditions are met. Who Is Eligible For The Home Energy Scotland Grant and Loan?
Every homeowner in Scotland is eligible to make an application for a solar panel loan, anyone can apply for a solar panel grant, but only people on benefits who live in non gas areas will be successful. A successful loan application will depend on your credit rating and the type of installation work being suggested. ECO 4 Solar Panel Grants Scotland
The ECO 4 solar panel grant scheme is a government backed, fully funded grant for heating, renewables and insulation upgrades. It has been set up by the government to support low income households, helping to save money on heating bills and creating more energy efficient homes. It will help people to save money and heat their homes, keeping them warmer whilst improving their homes EPC rating. Generally speaking, the funding is awarded to people who’s homes fall between an EPC rating of D, E, F or G. You may be eligible if you are a homeowner or private tenant and on benefits, complete our short form to find out if you are eligible.
Solar Panel Grants For People On Benefits
The government initially launched their ECO scheme in 2013, and the previous version, ECO 3, was replaced by ECO 4 in April 2022. The ECO 4 scheme allows you to apply for solar panels grants over the next four years, which could give you access to fully funded solar panels installation for your home of up to £7,500. It is open to everyone, so if you are a homeowner or private tenant, if you receive income related benefits and your property has inefficient heating or falls below EPC rating criteria, you will qualify for a solar grant.
If you are on benefits including: Job Seekers Allowance (JSA), Employment and Support Allowance (ESA), Housing Benefit, Pension Credit, Universal Credit (UC), Work Tax Credit, Warm House Discount Scheme Rebate, Child Tax Benefits and Child Benefit (depending on income threshold).
Who Qualifies For Solar Panel Grants in Scotland?
The governments ECO 4 grant scheme provides funding for various home improvements that improve your homes energy efficiency. The ECO 4 grant has been available since April 2022 and runs until the 31st of March 2026.
People who live in homes with an EPC rating of D, E, F or G are even more likely to qualify for a grant, having even as little as 4 solar panels will drastically improve your homes EPC rating.
Grants can be used for various heating and renewable products such as solar panels, home insulation, combi boilers, heat pumps and storage heaters.
You qualify for free solar panels and solar panel grants if you are:
- A homeowner, tenant or in the process of building your own home.
- Private landlords do not qualify for free solar panels or grants. Best to apply for a private landlord loan.
- Are over 60 years of age and in receipt of any pension credits or certain benefits.
- On any of the benefits listed below.
- Properties with no gas meters (off gas properties).
- Only properties with oil boilers, LPG boilers and electric boilers.

With Business Energy Scotland you can apply for loans of up to £100k to help with paying for your energy bills and energy efficient upgrades to your business, grants will be awarded as a cash-back grant. You can use this to install your solar panels, other renewables and energy efficient systems, including new equipment or to change the fabric of your building.
Local Energy Scotland CARES Grants
The Scottish Government’s Community and Renewable Energy Scheme (CARES) offers support for communities to benefit and take part in the energy transition to net zero
emissions. They offer support to get local energy projects and there is also funding available for solar panel grants. This support offers help to install renewable technologies to community buildings, community benefits and buildings with shared ownership. This funding is available to community organisations and charities who are eligible for CARES support. You must be a constituted non-profit community organisation operating across community or faith groups.
CARES is managed by Local Energy Scotland and offers a range of financial support to local energy projects.
